Understanding the ‘Pharmacy First’ service

Key information

  • A Major NHS Change: The “Pharmacy First” initiative transforms how pharmacists can help you. It is no longer just about over-the-counter remedies like painkillers.
  • Prescription Power: Pharmacists are highly trained clinicians (training for five years) who can now treat seven specific conditions. Crucially, they can supply prescription-only medications, including antibiotics, if appropriate.
  • Privacy: You will not need to discuss your health at the busy counter. Consultations take place in a private room, just like at the surgery.
  • The “Fastest Lane”: By using this service, you receive the exact same medication we would provide, but much faster and without the need to wait for a GP appointment.

What happens next?

If our reception team or a clinician advises you to visit a pharmacy for your condition, please trust this referral. It is often the quickest way to get the treatment you need. You can find your nearest participating pharmacy using the NHS finder tool.
