Understanding sick notes (Fit notes)

Key information

  • The 7-Day Rule: For the first 7 calendar days of any illness, you do not need a note from a doctor. You can “self-certify” by informing your employer directly or filling out an SC2 form.
  • Requesting a Note: You only need a formal Fit Note from a healthcare professional if you have been ill for more than 7 days.
  • Who Can Issue Them: Fit Notes are not just issued by GPs. Depending on your condition, it may be more appropriate for a Nurse, Pharmacist, Physiotherapist, or Occupational Therapist to issue your note.
  • Return to Work: You do not need a “signed off” note to return to work. Once your Fit Note expires, it is automatically assumed you are fit to return.
